Sunday In Loudoun + Halfway Point

Wow, it’s already the last week of June- my how time flies! I’m really looking forward to this week, because it’s the first time that I’ll really be home since school ended, and I can start marking things off of my to-do list (which is about 10 pages long).

In case you missed the re-cap of the first part of the weekend, go check it out. Sunday started in the usual way- I did a Tabata workout, taught spin, stretched, and came back home. We had planned to head out to Loudoun County to visit a few wineries with my mom + stepdad and Greg’s mom and stepdad (who were visiting from Florida and had been staying at our house since Thursday). We love going wine tasting, and figured it would be a fun activity to do for a Sunday.

Maryland has some okay wineries, but there are some really great ones in Virginia. In fact, we even got married at one! We stick to Loudoun county because it only takes about 20 minutes to get there, and there are a ton of great wineries to choose from. We started at Corcoran Winery, which we had been to once years ago. Just like all of the other Loudoun wineries, it has a beautiful landscape and grape vines that go on forever.

There was also live music being played outside, which I love!

A lot of the wineries hire local musicians to play, which usually includes mostly covers of popular songs. These guys played everything from Sublime to Pink Floyd. :)

Greg and I totally geeked out when we learned that Corcoran had also opened a brewery on their property, and were doing beer tastings as well! OF COURSE we had to take part.

There were 6 different beers for tasting, and we honestly liked them all. We ended up buying a growler of the Irish Red (which is weird, because that’s not a style of beer that either of us usually like). I also liked the fact that they provide roasted peanuts for tastings. :)

They also had a vanilla + chocolate porter which was to die for. We chatted with the gal who was conducting our tasting (hi, Meghan!) and some of the other that were to taste the beers, which is always one of my favorite aspects of going wine/beer tasting- you make instant friends! We will definitely be coming back here again.

The next winery we visited was Doukenie. We’ve been to Doukenie several times, and their wine is really, really good. They had recently completely renovated and expanded their tasting room, and it turned out really beautifully! And of course, the wine was just as good as the last time.

One of the best things about Doukenie is “Hope’s baklava.” Hope is an elder Greek woman that owns the winery and makes the most delicious baklava you’ve ever tasted. If you buy wine, you get a piece. I was lucky enough to get 6 pieces- one for each of us (and ate it too quickly to take a picture!).

After tasting at Doukenie, we went to have dinner at Magnolia’s, which is a restaurant that Greg and I had yet to try. They use a lot of local ingredients, like many of the other restaurants in the area, and their menu is great. Greg and I shared the “made to order” guacamole to start and I got a chilled seafood salad for my entree.

It had mixed greens, vanilla-poached lobster, lump crab meat, shrimp and AVOCADO. I was totally full (and only ate half of it) due to the mass consumption of homemade bread and guacamole beforehand, but (stupidly) still ate dessert. And it was just okay- not worth how icky and stuffed I felt afterwards though. Regardless, it was a really fun afternoon and good to spend time with family.


Today marks the halfway point of fitmixer bootcamp. Remember how pumped I was in the beginning? How much motivation I had? Yeah, I don’t know what happened to that, but I am determined to get it back! I started off really well, and then for a few different reasons (or excuses) started really falling off the wagon. The good thing is, it’s far from over, and there’s definitely still time for me to have success in the program. It really is all in my control, and I can only blame myself if I don’t succeed.

So far, I’ve noticed great contrast in how I’m doing after 6 weeks in the program:

The Good:

- I have ROCKED the workouts. I have been consistent (even on vacation) and have been challenging myself and pushing myself to new levels. I’ve even managed to fit all of the extra workouts in in addition to teaching a million group exercise classes a week. AND I’ve taken every Saturday off to REST- and actually look forward to it!

- I’ve noticed some good changes in my body- mostly muscle definition in my back, arms and shoulders. I definitely like what I see there!

- I’ve started embracing my body a bit more- looking in the mirror and pointing out positive things and parts of my body that I like, rather than just focusing on the areas that I really don’t like.

The Bad:

- While I am having some success in having a more positive body image, the negative thoughts are still there. I hate the fat I have around my stomach- it just never seems to change. I know that this is 100% due to my next point…

- My eating has sucked. I’m still eating about 95% clean foods- but just WAY too much. I’m not listening to my body’s signals for hunger, and eating mindlessly way too often.

- Too much alcohol! I really don’t drink very much, even though I know alcohol shows up on my blog quite often. The thing is, I generally have maybe a half of a beer when I do drink, and that’s usually only 2 times a week. Or I’ll just have a sip or two of Greg’s drink. I really love beer and wine, and love to taste – but I get wicked hangovers if I overdo it (which is about 2 drinks for me). Over the last few weeks, there’s just been to much booze going into my body, and I need to detox big time.

What I can do to make the next 6 weeks a success:

- Stay focused! Don’t let things like vacation or not having a structured schedule derail me

- Eat intuitively, listen to my body’s signals for hunger, etc. (If I can figure out how to do this, I’ll be amazed! But I am determined…)

- PLAN. I am much more successful when I plan out my meals. I tend to wait until I’m super hungry to think of what I’m going to make for a meal or snack, and “snack” while I’m thinking or looking in the pantry and fridge!

- Keep a positive attitude. Losing weight is a lifelong battle for me. It has never, and will never come easy. But, I just need to stay positive!

  1. Wow! I didn’t realize we were halfway done with the bootcamp. I am in the same boat as you…..feeling better about my body image and my guns! But know that I am really half-assing it. Ugh!!!!!

  2. Have you ever/do you keep a food journal? I find that it keeps me accountable if I write down what I’ve eaten.
    I stopped drinking alcohol a couple of years ago – I was a wine drinker and was finding that I’d get headaches from even just 1 glass. Well, after giving it up, within 1 month I lost 10lbs. I didn’t change anything else.

    • Yeah- I track my food on My Fitness Pal. It doesn’t really help me- because it stresses me out to have to constantly write down every little ingredient in there (it takes like 5 minutes to enter a salad that has like 6 different veggies). I’d probably be better off doing a kind of journal that doesn’t calorie count- just listing what I eat. But we’re supposed to track on My Fitness Pal for the fitmixer bootcamp I’m doing. I don’t know, I might stop and just journal.
      I don’t know if I’d lose weight by quitting drinking, because 95% of the time, I rarely drink (like maybe 1 total a week).

  3. Whoa!!!! I’m so impressed that you fit in all the workouts with all the classes you teach! And on vacation. That’s awesome. Eating is definitely the side I struggle with as well — since I actually literally like to workout. Lol. And I (except for this past weekend) do about the same — eat pretty healthy, just too much!!! Whenever I need to reel it back in, I work on measuring food and tracking it on the trusty iPhone!

    • Yes, I LOVE working out. That will never be my problem. But, when I work out more, I want to eat more (which unfortunately doesn’t balance out for me). I really hate those people that say they can eat whatever they want because they exercise. I believe in that saying “Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym!”

    So true! I love working out, but I love good food and drink too! I know that I am fit, but losing 10lbs would be great! It seems like everytime I lose 2-3lbs I fall off the wagon and it comes right back. Thanks for sharing your struggle – it is good to know that other ladies are going through the same thing.

  5. Love the wine & beer tastings – one of my favorite activities. Which means I also struggle with that same body image issue – the middle is not my favorite body part at all. We both seem to have similar issues – eat too much (even healthy food is not supposed to be consumed in large quantities) and enjoy drinks (although I certainly drink more than you it sounds). I have not been able to become consistent enough to overcome here – one day!

    • We both exercise a ton too- and you know that makes you WANT to eat more!
      I’m sure I would drink more if it didn’t make me feel so lousy the next day. With beer though- I can usually pace myself and if it’s earlier in the day, I’m good.

    And you’ve got plenty of time to get back on track with the eats – you were on vacation for goodness sakes!

    • I know you feel me on this, but I HATE the tracking. I hate calorie counting and taking 10 minutes to enter a meal because it has 20 different ingredients! It makes me nuts.

  8. Yay for a great weekend! Nice job in making it half way-wahoo!! I too am a planner, so it’s nice to have it in my head or on paper–and that is a good way to be accountable :)

  9. I have the same problem. I eat really healthy but I still eat too much. Sure, eating a container of hummus in two sittings is probably better for me than eating a container of chips, but it’s still extra calories that I don’t need. I can’t really figure out how to get it in check either.

Listening to my body with regards to food is hard, but when I do listen- stop taking bites AS SOON as I feel full… get up, walk away, start talking, push away my plate, clean the dishes… I find it easier to listen, realize I don’t need that extra bite, that second helping, or to clean my plate. I also thinks its helpful to remember every bite counts… do I want this, when I could enjoy THIS later… that rational helps me keep a lot of mindless eating at bay. Looks like you had a great weekend, I want to go wine tasting now!

    • You are definitely strong for being able to do that- to stop as soon as you’re full and WALK away. I know that when I make myself busy, I don’t mindlessly eat. And you’re right- every bite certainly does count!

  11. You got it, girl! It’s SO hard to eat right when traveling but planning ahead (even just thinking ahead when you can’t plan!) and committing to making good choices and eat the right portions is key. As silly as it is, I sometimes ask for the server to bring my a half portion of fries when I eat out – that way, I get my fix and when I clear my plate (which I always do when fries are involved), I haven’t overdone it. Restaurant portions are out of control!

  12. OK lady, I know you say less alcohol, but you HAVE to go to Blue Mountain Brewery when you are in town…I don’t even LIKE beer very much and sitting out on the deck with the flight is awesome. [They have great food, too!]
